The thug didnât know what the woman did to his boys.
She put her hand right through Snakes and â
His brain rebelled at the memory.
He recalled hiding behind the couch in the motel lobby until she and her friend went inside. He also recalled hoping and praying that the woman would not look for him and finish what she started.
He walked out onto the street, looking both ways.
He was safe as long as he didnât see that woman.
âNaughty, naughty.â
From behind.
He swung around.
A young boy stood right in front of him.
âWhereâd you come from?â he said.
The boy grinned and the gangsterâs bowels turned to putty. The boy pointed down to the ground.
âI saw what that bitch did to your friends,â the boy said. âPretty cool. I saw you run and hide.â The boy shook his head. âNot cool.â
The gangster had no reply. There was something wrong with that woman, but there was something worse with this kid.
âScram, punk,â the gangster said.
âScram? You do realize this isnât the Thirties anymore, right?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âYouâre not in the Thirties anymore. Hell, you ainât alive anymore either.â
The gangster took a step back. Memories he never thought he had began to unfurl in his head. Him running with his gang. Him making love to his wife. His mistresses. Laughing. Dying.
âWhat?â he stammered.
The boyâs smile widened and threatened to engulf the entire block.
âWhat year is this?â the gangster asked. He looked down the street, at the modern storefronts and cars lining the road.
The boy told him.
âBullshit. Bullshit. I told you to scram.â
The boy smirked. âIâve gotta get moving.â He stepped toward the gangster.
The gangster edged backward and tripped. He fell on his ass, but he was careful to keep the boy in front of him. His mind reeled such that he didnât hear the kid speak.
âIâve gotta get moving. Build momentum.â The kidâs eyes shone yellow. âIâve got people inside me and people still yet to see.â
The gangster didnât move, but he did briefly whimper as the Yellow Kid rolled over him and carried him along on a hellride for the ages.
